DESIGNED BY MYCOLOGY, PROMOTING SANCTUARY

Catriona MacKenzie creates glass with the intention to connect you to the material through tactility and colour. Her work is prominently about sanctuary - giving comfort through form, the functuality, and the story created behind each piece. Cat hopes that by breaking down the barriers between glass, and touch, her work helps to encourage its owner to adopt this philosophy in their everyday life.

She wants to bring a connection to her work and the owner, an excuse to stop and sit with the work; to use it in their routine; or to enjoy its presence in their everyday life.

Catriona’s designs attempt to convey a strong sense of design and a distinctive style, whilst maintaining a minimal aesthetic.

Cat is inspired by mycology, the sanctuary she finds walking in the woods, and the textures of the natural world around her. Her FRITH Glassware collections show her forest themed work

PROCESS

Catriona would describe herself as a maker first - a skilled Craftswoman. She likes the process of making, and has spent the last 19 years honing her technique. She has studied her BA (HONS) degree st Edinburgh College of Art. She spent 6 months in 2004 at Alfred University, NY State, USA, and has completed a 2 year Post-graduate diploma from the International Glass Centre, West Midlands.

She has also done a couple of masterclasses at Northlands Glass School, Caithness, with world renowned Glassblowers - SIMON MOORE, TOBIAS MOHL AND JANUSZ POZNIAK. She has worked for other makers and taught in various institutions.

Catriona’s work tends to concentrate on clean feminine shapes with coloured glass applications, while using modern cut glass decoration to add texture and pattern. Tactility is very important to the experience Cat wants to create.
