Sleagh-laighe - The Fallen Spear

Sleagh-laighe - The Fallen Spear

My 2014 entry into Art In Action's "Best of the Best" Exhibition

Description of piece: This piece of blown glass and cherry wood is an intricate piece of blown and carved glass. Seven colours have been laid over each other using a technique called "cup-overlay". These cups are blown and are then kept hot in a kiln. The solid piece is then crafted by gathering molten glass and encasing each layer with a coloured glass cup. Once all the colours are incased the hot piece can then be manipulated into the final shape and placed in a Lehr to cool down for over 12hours . Once cool this solid piece of glass was carved using diamond wheels and polished to reveal the colour worlds within. My choice of colour is significant to me. I come from the highlands of Scotland where the predominant colours of nature are green and purple hues. Home has always been an important place in my life. I hold it dear to my heart, but life has meant I have had to move away to other lands. This piece signifies my relationship with home: solid, strong and eternal, but with a fragile uncertainty which I have expressed by placing this "spear" into a wooden base to cause the viewer to feel the tension and fragility created by the positioning.
